Espace Borax a le plaisir de présenter le travail du bijoutier et designer coréen, Hyun-Seok. Entouré de ses chats et de son chien, il réalise des bijoux en trompe-l’oeil bluffants, qui peuvent faire penser à des émoticônes ou des logos minimaliste dessinés à l’ordinateur. Pourtant il n’emploie ni la cire perdue ni l’impression 3D ni de CNC. Chaque pièce est composée de plusieurs éléments entièrement réalisés à la main puis soudés avec une grande précision. Il a également réalisé des appareils photo entièrement en argent et parfaitement fonctionnels ainsi que des ustensiles de cuisine ou des outils.

Hyun-seok est né en 1972 et a commencé à apprendre les métiers du métal dans un lycée professionnel en 1987. Il est entré au département d’artisanat de l’université Konkuk en 1990. En 1992, il a travaillé comme assistant de Woo Jin-Soon et a reçu une formation d’apprenti. Après avoir obtenu un baccalauréat en beaux-arts en 1995, il a travaillé pendant deux ans en Corée du Sud avant de s’installer au Canada en 1997. Il a obtenu une maîtrise en beaux-arts au Nova Scotia College of Art and Design de 1998 à 2000. Il est ensuite retourné en Corée et a commencé à travailler en tant qu’artiste indépendant, avec des expositions solo au Japon, en Suède ou en Australie.

Espace Borax is pleased to present the work of Korean jeweler and designer Hyun-Seok. Surrounded by his cats and dog. Surrounded by his cats and his dog, he creates stunning trompe-l’oeil jewelry, reminiscent of emoticons or minimalist computer-drawn logos. Yet he doesn’t use lost wax, 3D printing or CNC. Each piece is made up of a number of elements, entirely hand-crafted and then welded together with great precision. He has also created perfectly functional cameras entirely in silver, as well as kitchen utensils and tools.

Hyun-seok was born in 1972 and began learning metal crafts at a vocational high school in 1987. He entered the Crafts Department at Konkuk University in 1990 and received systematic training in metal crafts. In 1992, he worked as an assistant to artist Woo Jin-Soon and received apprenticeship training. After graduating from college in 1995 with a BFA, he worked as a metal crafts artist in South Korea for two years before moving to Canada in 1997. He earned his MFA at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design from 1998 to 2000. After graduating from graduate school in 2000, he returned to Korea and began working as a metal crafts artist, holding solo exhibitions in Japan, Sweden, or Australia.
